Get the best deal

A few checks before you renew or switch can help you find a plan that fits your usage and budget.

  1. 01

    Put coverage first

A cheap plan is only useful if it works where you need it. Check the underlying network’s coverage at home, at work and in other places you regularly use your phone, including indoors.

  2. 02

Only pay for what you need

Check recent bills or your network app. If you normally use 5–10 GB a month, you may not need unlimited data. Allow some headroom without paying for far more than you use.

  3. 03

Happy with your phone? Try SIM-only

If your current plan included a phone and you’re happy to keep it, a SIM-only plan could cost less. Check any remaining handset repayments before changing plans.

  4. 04

    Shop around, then ask

Try more than one comparison site as well as networks’ own websites. Deals can differ. Ask your current provider to improve its offer, then compare the terms before accepting.

  5. 05

    Think about the commitment

Compare short and long contracts. A longer commitment should offer savings worth giving up the flexibility to move. Future plans may offer more data or better value, and your needs can change.

  6. 06

    Compare the whole cost

Add up upfront fees, monthly payments, scheduled price rises and extras over the minimum term. Check early-exit charges too, rather than comparing the advertised monthly price alone.

  7. 07

Look for discounts you qualify for

Check your employer’s staff benefits and schemes such as Blue Light Card if eligible. Compare the final price with other offers. If you receive benefits, check social-tariff eligibility too.

  8. 08

    Check roaming before you travel

Check whether your destinations are included, plus roaming allowances, fair-use limits and charges. If roaming costs extra, compare the price of an add-on for your trip before choosing a plan.

  9. 09

    Switch and keep your number

In the UK, text PAC to 65075, then give the code to your new provider to arrange the transfer. Check handset repayments and any early-exit charges first.

These tips focus on the UK. If you’re elsewhere, check your local switching process and provider’s terms.
